Full Above Water Respray Project - MY Relentless

MY-Relentless Project Overview

MY Relentless is a stunning 33.5m Kingship Expedition originally built in 2006, featuring timeless styling, sleeping up to 11 guests in 5 rooms and is capable of carrying 7 crew.

In late 2017 the owner decided that it was time to undertake some major upgrades, including a full systems overhaul and an exterior respray from the water line, to the top of the fashion plate.

Understanding the work required represented a significant project for MY Relentless, the owner reached out to Andy Walton, a veteran Captain/Project Manager, with whom he had previously worked with in 2004

Project Challenge

  1. Finding a shipyard in the South Pacific with the necessary facilities and equipment to safely lift the vessel and with a refit shed large enough to house her.
  2. Finding a professional and experienced painting contractor capable of delivering quality workmanship, to a budget and deadline.

The Solution

Having worked extensively across Europe, USA & Australia, Andy set about visiting with a number of the prominent shipyards throughout Australia & New Zealand. Andy also reached out to his network of Captains & Project Managers. From this network, he was introduced to Jason Motbey, the Managing Director of Total Refinishing, who came highly recommended to him.

Total Refinishing had been establishing themselves as new tenants at the Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM), based on the Gold Coast, Australia.

Having met and discussed the MY Relentless project with numerous contractors, Andy was impressed by Total Refinishing’s approach and professionalism. These attributes matched the facilities at GCCM, which could adequately handle MY Relentless.

Andy Walton – Captain/Project Manager said:

“From the first time we entered the Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard and met with Jason, we were extremely confident that we had found a business who could deliver the finish we desired. Being based inside a shipyard that provided great facilities, within a protected and safe environment, made for an easy decision”

Two areas of Andy’s discussions with Total Refinishing that caught his attention were:

  1. Total Refinishing’s skill and expertise in being to complete a project of this scale without requiring scaffolding – therefore leading to a considerable cost reduction.
  2. That Total Refinishing were approved applicators of Jotun’s Xtreme Gloss product range, which had been widely applied across Europe on numerous superyachts.

Andy was initially a little apprehensive, as he had never seen a vessel of this size resprayed this way before, however was comfortable that Total Refinishing had the team and experience to execute. A final price and scope of works were agreed and work was scheduled to commence on 14th September 2018 and be completed by mid December 2018.

The Process

The skilful team at GCCM carefully lifted MY Relentless from the water on 14th September, from where she was moved into superyacht shed 64, which was to be her new home for the next 12 weeks.

The Total Refinishing team then set about the task of transforming MY Relentless before a mid-December 2018 deadline. Throughout the project there was an average of 5 experienced team members, often working throughout the night.

A summary breakdown of the work completed:

Applying protective masking – 2 days
Completed repair work, grinding out rust back to clean substrate –7 days
Applied approximately 40 litres of surface tolerant epoxy primers – 2 days
Faired all repair areas using Jotun Mega filler – 4 weeks
Sprayed approximately 100 litres of Jotun high build primers – 3 days
Guide coat all scoped areas – 1 day
Board sand high build areas – 7 days
Re-guide coat – 1 day
Machine sand all surfaces – 7 days
Fine filling & detailed sanding preparation for topcoat – 12 days
Re mask all area – 7 days
Spray Jotun Xtreme Gloss top coat – 3-4 days
Cure time & detail work 7 days
Mask boot top line – 1 day
Re-mask complete vessel for paint application on boot top – 1 day
Spray boot top – 1 day
De mask complete vessel – 4 days
Full boat detail – 12 days
Finish – 7th December (on-time & on-budget)

Andy quickly identified that completing this project without scaffolding not only considerably reduced the overall cost, it also allowed for easy visual access of the project throughout its various stages. On a number of occasions Andy changed or modified the original scope of works, which never affected the completion date or cost.

Andy Walton – Captain/Project Manager said:

“It became apparent that this approach was perfect and a great idea. Nothing was too much trouble for Jason and his team, they worked day and night to ensure work was completed on-time and on-budget

We can’t speak highly enough about Total Refinishing and would thoroughly recommend them to anyone in the marine industry. Also mention must go the team at GCCM who looked after us throughout our stay and worked seamlessly with Jason to deliver a first-class experience

Throughout my 25 years in the industry this ranks as the best executed project I’ve been involved with”

As planned, work on MY Relentless was completed on 7th December 2018 and the journey back to the water commenced. This was a proud day for all those involved in the project.

Jason Motbey – Managing Director Total Refinishing said:

“Andy was a pleasure to work with and we couldn’t be happier with the finished product. Our team never wavered from delivering our company goal of providing the absolute best finish in Australia, always on-time and on-budget”
